Papal telegram following death of Cardinal Paskai

August 18, 2015

Pope Francis has sent a telegram of condolence to the archbishop of Esztergom-Budapest following the death of Cardinal László Paskai, Hungary’s primate from 1987 until his retirement in 2002.

With the death of the 88-year-old prelate, there are now 219 members of the College of Cardinals, of whom 120 are eligible to take part in a papal election.

“I offer prayerful condolences to you, the clergy, men and women religious and lay faithful of the Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest, and I thank Almighty God for his many years of service to the Church in Hungary,” Pope Francis said in his telegram. “In commending his soul to the merciful love of the Father and uniting myself spiritually to all assembled for the solemn funeral rites, I impart my apostolic blessing as a pledge of consolation and peace in the Lord.”
