Irish premier lauds his country's heritage of 'spiritualism'

August 17, 2015

In a message welcoming participants in an international pilgrimage to the shrine of Our Lady of Knock, Irish Prime Minister Enda Kenny said that he hoped the visitors would appreciate the Irish tradition of “spiritualism.”

Kenny—who identifies himself as a Catholic and regular churchgoer, although he has clashed repeatedly with the Church on public issues—did not stress Ireland's rich Catholic heritage in his greeting to the pilgrims. Instead he said that he hoped “in the land of St Patrick and the place of apparition of Mary they get a deep appreciation of what that spiritualism is, the kind of people we are and the land that we inhabit.”

Spiritualism is "a system of belief or religious practice based on supposed communication with the spirits of the dead, especially through mediums." Is the Prime Minister ignorant, or is he being provocative, or is he simply being rude to Catholic visitors?
