Jerusalem bishop encourages pilgrims to visit Holy Land

August 17, 2015

The patriarchal vicar of Jerusalem has issued a new appeal for Christian pilgrims to visit the Holy Land.

Bishop Giacinto-Boulos Marcuzzo says that the fears that deter many Christians from traveling to the Holy Land are “absolutely unfounded.” While violence has shattered Iraq and Syria and spread to other countries, he said, Israel today enjoys relative peace and security.

Moreover, the bishop observes, while a pilgrimage may enrich the faith of Christians from other countries, it also provides vital support—both spiritual and financial—for the Christians living in the Holy Land. “Our experience in the Holy Land suggests the following response: there are several ways, but the 'easiest' and most effective in helping the Holy Land is by going there on pilgrimage,” he says.

The AsiaNews service, in reporting the bishop’s statement, announced that it is organizing its own special pilgrimage, to take place October 29 to November 5.
