Peruvian cardinal charged with plagiarism for quoting Popes

August 17, 2015

A Peruvian newspaper has accused Cardinal Juan Luis Cipriani Thorne of plagiarism because he quoted papal statements without attribution.

El Comercio found that the cardinal had reproduced several paragraphs from written works by Pope Benedict XVI and Pope Paul VI, without indicating that he was quoting. The paper said that it would no longer publish the cardinal's work.

Cardinal Cipriani said that while he might have referenced the papal statements, he saw them as part of the heritage of Catholicism. He added that he constantly repeats papal statements. "All my teachings come from the Pontiffs of the Church," he said.
