India imposes, backtracks on ban on pornographic sites
August 14, 2015
India’s government imposed a ban on Internet access to 857 pornographic websites, only to backtrack and limit its order to sites that carry child pornography.
Church spokesmen offered varied responses to the ban, according to paraphrases of their remarks published by UCA News.
Father Joseph Chinayyan, deputy secretary-general of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of India, stated that “the free and uncontrolled access to pornographic sites has done irreparable damage to young people; hence, banning offending websites is a move in the right direction.”
On the other hand, Father Paul Thelakkat, spokesman for the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, expressed concern that “government control on any form of expression would amount to chaos and a totalitarian state.”
