Cardinal Tong makes 'urgent appeal' for end to destruction of crosses in Chinese province

August 13, 2015

Cardinal John Tong of Hong Kong has issued an “urgent appeal” to Chinese government leaders to curb a campaign of demolition of crosses.

Early last year Xia Baolong, the secretary of the Communist Party in the Zhejiang province, complained that “too many crosses” were cluttering the skyline. Since that time, more than 1,000 crosses have been pulled down. Noting that most of these crosses were built with appropriate permits and government approvals, Cardinal Tong said that the demolitions were “unlawful acts.”

The cardinal noted, too, that in some cases clergy and lay people have been arrested for attempting to save the crosses from destruction.

Cardinal Tong asked central government leaders in Beijing to investigate the situation in Zhejiang and restore the rule of law.

The cardinal also called upon Catholics to fast and pray for their brethren in Zhejiang.
