Italy's Northern League raps bishops' involvement in immigration debate

August 12, 2015

Leaders of Italy’s Northern League have stepped up their criticism of Bishop Nunzio Galantino, the secretary-general of the Italian bishops’ conference, for his public statements decrying the party’s call for restrictions on immigration.

Roberto Calderoli, the deputy speaker of the Senate, said that the Church could speak more credibly if the Vatican lifted its own restrictions on entry into Vatican City. “You should practice what you preach,” he suggested to Church leaders.

Matteo Salvini, the head of the Northern League, said: “Immigration without limits and without rules is chaos.” In a Facebook comment on Church statements, he asked pointedly: “Is Italy still a republic, or dependent on the Vatican?”
