International community a ‘silent accomplice’ in the persecution of Christians, says bishop

August 10, 2015

Archbishop Maroun Lahham, the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem’s vicar for Jordan, has told an Italian television station that “the international community is absolutely inert, absent, or rather a silent accomplice” in the persecution of Christians.

The prelate made his remarks one year after Iraqi Christian refugees, fleeing the advance of the Islamic State, began to arrive in neighboring Jordan.

“The international Christian community, however, has never ceased to send aid to meet the needs of the brothers of the Church,” he continued. “The political world is absolutely to be condemned, but the world of Caritas helps us, especially the Italian Episcopal Conference.”
