A week after he appointed Alfredo Pontecorvi as the new Vatican health director, Pope Francis has named Fabrizio Soccorsi, 73, as his personal physician.
The author of over 100 articles, Soccorsi is a specialist in internal medicine who has taught medicine at La Sapienza University and has chaired the hepatology department at a hospital in Rome.
Until the new appointments, the director of the Department of Health and Hygiene for the Vatican City State had also served as the Pope’s personal physician. Pontecorvi’s predecessor, Patrizio Polisca, remains Pope Emeritus Benedict's personal physician.
