Milwaukee archdiocese reaches agreement with abuse victims on $21-million settlement

August 05, 2015

The Archdiocese of Milwaukee has reached an agreement to pay $21 million to settle the legal claims brought by hundreds of sex-abuse victims.

Archbishop Jerome Listecki hailed the agreement as a “day of rebirth” for the archdiocese, saying that the Church could now return its focus to “word, worship, and service.” But Jeff Anderson, the lead attorney for abuse victims, said that the agreement was “a terrible disservice to the survivors,” and was accepted only because the prospect of further legal battle was even more painful.

The agreement, which could end a protracted legal battle, must still be reviewed by the judge who is overseeing the case of the archdiocese in bankruptcy court. Because of the bitterly contested legal proceedings, the abuse victims would receive less than the lawyers representing the archdiocese in the case.

Maybe the prospect could have been less painful if at least a few of the claimants had taken it upon themselves to develop the ability to say, 'I forgive you.' No amount of $ will compensate for that lack.
