New Chinese bishop ordained with Vatican approval-- 1st in 3 years

August 04, 2015

For the first time in three years, a Catholic bishop has been ordained in China with the approval of both the Holy See and the Beijing government.

Bishop Joseph Zhang Yinlin was ordained as an auxiliary bishop of Anyan, in the Henan province, on August 4. He was ordained by the 90-year-old leader of the diocese, Bishop Thomas Zhang Huaixin. Two other bishops—both recognized by the Holy See—acted as co-consecrators.

The last Chinese bishop who was ordained with the approval of both the government and the Holy See was Bishop Ma Daqin of Shanghai. However, at his July 2012 consecration, Bishop Ma Daqin announced that he was breaking his ties with the government-backed Patriotic Association. He was soon taken into official custody, and remains under house arrest to this day.
