Indian archbishop opposes plans for massive seaport

Citing concerns about the fate of 50,000 fishermen and their families, an Indian prelate has issued a pastoral letter opposing a plans to construct a massive seaport in the southwestern Indian state of Kerala.

The Vizhinjam International Seaport would lead to the displacement of 32 fishing villages, UCA News reported.

"We see this as a human rights issue," Archbishop Maria Callist Soosa Pakiam of Trivandrum said in his pastoral letter, which was read out at Masses in his diocese on August 2. "We are not against development. We are only seeking to protect the interests of a section of the community who stand to lose heavily due to to development."

    The port will create many jobs in its construction and operation. Opposing it is like opposing the manufacturing of cars because buggy whip manufacturers would be put out of business.
