Bombs rock two churches in New Mexico, but cause no casualties

August 03, 2015

Explosions that rocked two churches in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on Sunday morning were very likely connected, police believe.

One explosive device was set in a mailbox on the wall of Calvary Baptist church, and detonated at 8:20 in the morning. A second was placed in a trash container just outside Holy Cross Catholic church, and exploded 20 minutes later, while Mass was being celebrated inside.

There were no casualties caused by the explosions; both church buildings suffered minor damage.

“It doesn’t appear to be coincidental,” said Danny Trujillo, a spokesman for Las Cruces police, pointing to the timing of the two explosions and the fact that churches were the apparent targets. Police are investigating.
