US bishops urge Senate to defund Planned Parenthood
August 03, 2015
Cardinal Sean O’Malley of Boston, the chairman of the US bishops’ pro-life committee, has written to members of the US Senate, urging them to support a bill that would strip federal funding for Planned Parenthood.
In his letter—which was dated August 3, the day of a scheduled Senate vote on the topic—Cardinal O’Malley said that the recent scandal involving the sale of fetal tissue “is the latest demonstration of a callousness toward women and their unborn children that is shocking to many Americans.” He called upon the Senate to direct funding elsewhere “so that women can obtain their health care from providers that do not promote abortion.”
