English bishop encourages faithful to oppose assisted-suicide bill

July 31, 2015

An English bishop has urged the faithful to take an active role in opposing a bill that would allow for assisted suicide.

Speaking to pilgrims who had traveled to France to pray at the shrine of Our Lady of Lourdes, Bishop Mark Davis of Shrewsbury said that the proposed legislation was “the first step on the road to euthanasia.” He added that bill did not include adequate safeguards against abuse. “We have good reason to fear that the right to die will quickly become the duty to die,” he said.

Bishop Davies encouraged the pilgrims to contact their representatives in Parliament and ask them to oppose the bill. Referring to the hope that so many sick people have found at the Lourdes shrine, he said that it is “hard to believe that a law of despair is about to be rushed through Parliament.”
