Kerala court: Christians who reconvert to Hinduism may benefit from affirmative action
July 31, 2015
The high court of the southwest Indian state of Kerala has ruled that Christian dalits who reconvert to Hinduism may benefit from affirmative action programs.
Dalits were formerly referred to as "untouchables," members of Hinduism's lowest caste.
The court cited a 1983 ruling that a "child could always convert back to Hinduism and claim the rights of the caste of her forefathers once she converts back to Hinduism."
An official of the Vishva Hindu Parishad (World Hindu Council) told UCA News that "we have conducted several events reconverting Christian and Muslim people to Hinduism. Now there is a steady increase in applications for reconversion. We are planning a mega event."
