Congress votes to limit access House chamber during to Pope's speech
July 30, 2015
The US House of Representatives has voted to restrict public access to the legislative chamber when Pope Francis addresses a joint session of Congress on September 24.
The office of Speaker John Boehner said that the restrictions were necessary “to make make sure that attendance at the joint meeting does not exceed the capacity of the chamber to hold a safe and dignified event." Former members of Congress will not be allowed to attend the papal speech. Only current members and officials of Congress, the Supreme Court, the president and vice-president, and a handful of other top government officials will be admitted.
