Minnesota: archdiocesan administrator understands demand for accounting of investigation into former archbishop

July 13, 2015

The interim leader of the Archdiocese of St. Paul-Minneapolis has said that he recognizes the need to “give an accounting of what’s been going on” in the troubled see.

Archbishop Bernard Hebda, who was appointed last month as apostolic administrator of the archdiocese, said that he is weighing requests for a release of the results of an investigation into misconduct charges against Archbishop John Nienstedt, who resigned in June. “I certainly recognize there is a great interest there,” he said. But Archbishop Hebda said that he wanted to study the situation thoroughly before making any decisions.

Archbishop Hebda, who was serving as coadjutor Archbishop of Newark, said that he was taken completely by surprise when he was called to Minnesota archdiocese. He said that he needs to develop some familiarity with the legal cases in which the archdiocese is involved, especially the current bankruptcy proceedings.

Archbishop Hebda, whose appointment as administrator is temporary, predicted that the Vatican would make a permanent appointment of a new archbishop within the year.
