Cardinal Scola challenges Muslims on violence, persecution

Cardinal Angelo Scola of Milan has issued a challenge to Muslims, asking how Allah could accept the murder of innocents as an act of worship.

In a message to the Islamic community, timed for the end of Ramadan, the Italian cardinal said that the past year has been “marked by events that have caused great suffering for both our communities.” Much of that suffering, he observed, has been caused by violence—violence that contradicts the claim that Islam is a religion of peace.

“The dignity of man has been violated too often, and life itself destroyed because of profession of faith,” the cardinal wrote. “In particular, we have heard the cry of many of our Christian brothers who are being persecuted.

    If the Muslims follow the Quran, they will say that non-Muslims are not innocent. They are a source of temptation for Muslims to convert to a non-Muslim religion and thereby be condemned to hell. Islam is a religion of peace only within the Sunni or Shia community.
