Colombian bishops welcome ceasefire offer
July 10, 2015
The president of the Colombian Episcopal Conference welcomed a guerrilla movement’s offer for a month-long unilateral ceasefire but expressed concerned that such offers leave the door open for further conflict.
Archbishop Luis Castro Quiroga of Tunja said that the Church is involved in the peace process in an apolitical manner by proclaiming the Gospel, offering humanitarian assistance, and ministering to victims.
Since 1964, 220,000 people have lost their lives in the Colombian conflict, which has involved the guerilla movement (FARC), the government, and paramilitary groups.
