Eucharist strengthens the weak, Pope tells congregation in Bolivia

July 09, 2015

The Eucharist “draws us out of our individualism in order to live together as disciples,” Pope Francis said in his homily at a Mass celebrated in Santa Cruz de la Sierra, Bolivia, to open the country’s 5th Eucharistic Congress.

Reflecting on the Gospel reading for the votive Mass, which recounted the multiplication of the loaves and fishes, the Pope emphasized that Jesus told his disciples not to turn anyone away. Instead Jesus said: “you yourselves, give them something to eat.”

At today’s Mass too, the Pope remarked, many people had made long difficult trips to attend. The journey may be tiring, he said, but the Eucharist gives “the strength to keep hope alive.”

Pope Francis contrasted the words of Jesus with the attitude of a materialistic society that sees no value in people who are deemed unproductive. “Jesus’ way of seeing things leaves no room for the mentality which would cut bait on the weak and those most in need,” the Pontiff said.
