Abuse victims ask bankruptcy court to approve showing of video at all Masses in Minnesota archdicoese

July 09, 2015

Lawyers representing sex-abuse victims have asked a US bankruptcy court to approve a request for all parishes in the Archdiocese of St. Paul- Minneapolis to show a video encouraging other victims to come forward.

Judge Robert Kressel has set a deadline of August 3 for all claims against the archdiocese. The representatives of sex-abuse victims propose that their video be shown at all Masses celebrated in the archdiocese this weekend.

Lawyers for the archdiocese has objected to the proposal, saying that ample notice has already been given for victims to come file claims, and video presentation would be unsuitable for children in Sunday congregations.

The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass is the corporate worship of the Catholic Church; it would be highly inappropriate to use it as a venue for something of this nature, however rightly intended. Nor is it the place of the the court to dictate in any way whatsoever what form this worship might take, including the showing of this video.

Court deciding what happens at Mass (which is strictly religious event) would be the official end of religious freedom and the separation between Church and State.
