Czech bishops offer to welcome Christian refugees

July 08, 2015

Catholic bishops in the Czech Republic are offering to provide homes for Christian refugees.

The Czech bishops’ conference said that it would work with Catholic families to provide homes for refugees, coordinating efforts with local government officials and charitable groups.

Bishop Jan Graubner said that the Czech Church had already received many offers of help from the faithful. He said that help could be extended to refugees from the Middle East, mentioning a recent conversation with a prelate from Kurdistan who reported that 50,000 people were living in tents, having been driven from their homes by the Islamic State.

Cardinal Dominik Duka of Prague observed that Christian refugees might come from other regions as well. “All of us can see that the situation in the Maghreb and the Middle East,” he said, “but also the Ukrainian-Russian border is getting dramatic, many people are seeking asylum and aid.”
