Cardinal Turkson: world must turn away from consumerism, colonialism

July 08, 2015

Addressing the World Meeting of Popular Movements in Santa Cruz, Bolivia, the president of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace called upon the international community to turn away from a consumerism and colonialism.

“The poor, peasants, and indigenous peoples have their own way of doing politics,” which are “different from dominant forms and often not understood by the parameters of Western rational processes,” said Cardinal Peter Turkson, who added that the Church promotes the “dignity of the person over and above unbridled consumerism.”

Are we forgetting that we also consume vaccines, advanced medical procedures, internet for growth through websites like this one and all of our advances? To advance beyond a cave with a fire out front we will of necessity consume. It would be very helpful if we had more guidance on how to be good consumers and how to be good and fair producers. Hobby Lobby is a well know Christian company famous for how well they treat employees and their 15.00 minimum wage. More guidance please!

    1. Although I favor consuming less, I am concerned. If we consume less, less production will be needed so fewer jobs will be available. 2. Citing current cases of colonialism would be helpful.
