Papal foundation weighs proposals for funding development projects in Latin America
June 23, 2015
The board of the Populorum Progressio Foundation—set up by St. John Paul II to provide support for development projects in Latin America—is meeting in Guayaquil, Ecuador this week to evaluate projects.
Established in 1992 as an arm of the Pontifical Council Cor Unum, which handles the charitable work of the papacy, the Populorum Progressio Foundation has now funded more than 4,000 projects, typically local self-help programs that have developed resources for irrigation, safe drinking water, health-care facilities, hygiene, and agriculture.
This year the Foundation is concentrating on projects that serve indigenous people and rural communities in Latin America. More than 100 projects have been presented for possible funding.
