Sister Nirmala, successor to Mother Teresa, dead at 81

Sister Nirmali Joshi, who succeeded Mother Teresa of Calcutta as the leader of the Missionaries of Charity, died on June 22 at the age of 81.
Sister Nirmala was born in Ranchi, India to Hindu parents. Educated by Catholic missionaries, she met Mother Teresa and was inspired to join her. She established the contemplative branch of the order, and was elected in 1997 to become the superior of the Missionaries of Charity.
On June 19, Sister Nirmala suffered a kidney failure, brought on by heart disease. Opting against dialysis, she returned home to spend her last hours with her community in Calcutta.
