Pope Francis: the world of work should be open to the young
June 22, 2015
Pope Francis received members of the Italian National Federation of the Knights of Labor in audience on June 20 and emphasized that the world of work should be open to the young.
Italy’s current youth unemployment rate is 40.9%.
The world of work should be eager to engage the young, but “in recent years the message they have often received is that there is no need of them … This is a symptom of a serious malfunction, which cannot be attributed only to causes on the global and international level.”
The common good, Pope Francis continued, “cannot be achieved through a mere increase in earnings or production,” but requires “the active involvement of all the parties that make up the social body. The social teaching of the Church continually recalls this fundamental criterion: that the human being is at the center of development. As long as men and women remain passive or marginalized, the common good cannot be considered fully achieved.”
