In a June 12 meeting with airport chaplains, Pope Francis observed that airports are “cities within cities, where multiple realities intertwine and overlap.”
The Pope told the chaplains that their work requires humility and docility to the Holy Spirit, enabling them to respond to a wide variety of pastoral needs. He paid particular attention to the needs of refugees and asylum seekers, who are sometimes stranded in airports because they do not have proper travel documents. He also mentioned the “tragic situations” that arise because of hijackings or airplane accidents.
