Vatican bank furnished crucial information for fraud charges against Italian religious order

June 11, 2015

Italian prosecutors are crediting the Vatican bank, the Institute for Religious Works (IOR), with providing information that has led to criminal charges against the executives of a nursing-home chain run by the Congregation of Divine Providence.

Two members of the religious congregation, as well as executives and prominent politicians, face charges of fraudulent bankruptcy. The Divine Providence nursing homes allegedly filed for bankruptcy while concealing separate bank accounts at the IOR.

“The IOR’s collaboration was precious,” police investigators said. The case illustrates the new degree of collaboration between Italian civic officials and the administration of the Vatican bank, which has implemented a series of reforms to ensure transparency in financial transfers.
