Ghana’s bishops frustrated with government following flooding

Following deadly annual flooding in the nation’s capital, Ghana’s bishops expressed frustration with government officials.

Officials should not “give building permits to people who build their houses on water courses,” the bishops said in a statement signed by Bishop Joseph Osei-Bonsu, the episcopal conference president.

“For all this time, what we have witnessed is government officials and ministers visiting flood scenes to commiserate with the victims and to make long empty promises to fix the situation,” they added. “Year in and year out, the same situation keeps recurring without any concrete practical steps being taken to address it holistically.”

    What the bishops are referring to in this article is called in the hydrology part of my earth system science course the non-structural approach to minimizing the damage to people and property caused by building homes on floodplains. It's only common sense, but where large amounts of mammon are involved...
