Soccer championship drives Corpus Christi celebrations indoor in Rimini, Italy

In Rimini, Italy, where Corpus Christi celebrations usually take place in the central Piazza Cavour, diocesan officials decided to move the ceremonies to the city’s cathedral this year, to avoid conflicting with the television broadcast of the Champions League Final.

The diocese explained that the soccer game, which began just after the scheduled Mass time, would draw large crowds to the area around the Piazza Cavour. Many local bars had arranged for large-screen TVs, enabling patrons to watch the contest on the streets, and “making concentrated prayer difficult,” the diocese said.
