Father Fidenzio Volpi, who had been appointed by Pope Francis as apostolic commissioner of the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate, died on June 7. He had been seriously ill since suffering a severe stroke in April.
Father Volpi has been named by the Pontiff to supervise the Franciscan Friars of the Immaculate in a bid by the Vatican to restore order in a growing young religious community that had been wracked by internal disputes and questions about improper financial transactions. His tenure had provoked complaints from traditionalist Catholics, who charged that Father Volpi was suppressing the order.
