Ukraine issue will be in focus when Putin meets Pope

June 05, 2015

The conflict in Ukraine will loom over a meeting next week between Pope Francis and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The Vatican has confirmed that the Pope will meet with the Russian leader on June 10. Putin will be in Italy to visit the Milan Expo.

While the Ukrainian Catholic Church has repeatedly denounced Russian aggression in Ukraine, the Vatican has avoided direct comment on the conflict. In one of his few comments on the issue, Pope Francis spoke of his sorrow about the “war between Christians,” leaving some Ukrainian Catholics feeling that the Pontiff had missed an opportunity to speak in their defense.

Maybe after he explains to the Pope why he felt that the dissolution of the Soviet Union was such a mistake, why giving millions of people self-determination and a return of their own nations after the Russians sacked and raped them, Ukraine and a multitude of other nations, who are now themselves free, and "kept" Ukraine unjustly for decades, after they executed thousands of Ukrainian Catholic bishops and priests who refused to self-dissolve their Church, and nuked the country at Chernobyl because of their incompetence. Maybe after he explains all this to the Pope, he can tell the Pope of the inadequacy of the meager American response to his own crimes by sending no weapons, but only blankets and meals ready to eat! I'd like to hear those comments. Sadly, I doubt the Pope will hold him to answer these questions.

Good! I hope Putin lays out for the Pope what the U.S. has been up to in Ukraine.
