Bishops: ‘We want a different Guatemala!’

June 05, 2015

Amid increasing anti-government protests, Guatemala’s bishops issued a statement denouncing government corruption.

The bishops stated, “We want a different Guatemala! … We need to break the cycle of corruption, impunity, and conflict.”

“We need to strengthen the democracy we have to make it more expressive of the defense of the common good and the promotion of human dignity,” they continued, adding that “we cannot forget that in our country half of the children live in a state of chronic malnutrition.”

The Central American nation of 15.5 million is 80% Catholic, according to Vatican statistics.

The only way Guatemala will have reform is if the Church engages the people in a spiritual and moral renewal. The priests and bishops need to teach about sin and the eternal consequences of mortal sin. Cohabitation and fornication, children born out of wedlock, rape, abuse of women and children, exploitation of workers, the drug trade, lack of charity, gang culture, violence - not attending Mass on Sundays and Holy Days, not practicing the Faith: the bishops need to TEACH the Faith courageously.

Not favourable to that kind of pronouncement. It is based on, and and reinforces, a lie: that governments are the sole responsible actors for a nation well being, and thus the only ones who can provide solutions.
