Vatican-France relations remain cordial stalled ambassador's nomination: Cardinal Parolin

There is no “crisis” in diplomatic relations between the Holy See and France, despite the stalled nomination of a new French ambassador to the Holy See, the Vatican’s Secretary of State has said.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who was in Paris to address a UNESCO conference, met privately with President François Hollande and Prime Minister Manuel Valls. He declined to reveal details about his conversations with the French leaders, but acknowledged that they had spoken about the January nomination of Laurent Stefanini, which the Vatican has not yet approved.

Cardinal Parolin said that the Vatican was pleased by the French government’s efforts to enlist world opinion in defense of the Christian presence in the Middle East. “We must try, with the diplomatic means that are available to us, to defend Christians and give them the chance to stay,” said the cardinal
