Cardinal meets with Congo’s president, asks for reopening of Catholic radio and TV

June 04, 2015

Cardinal Laurent Monsengwo Pasinya of Kinshasa, a member of the Pope’s advisory Council of Cardinals, met with the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s president, Joseph Kabila, on June 2.

Last September, the nation’s bishops reiterated their opposition to a proposed constitutional amendment that would allow Kabila to serve a third term. In January, the government cut off the broadcast signal of Catholic radio and television stations.

During their meeting, Cardinal Monsengwo Pasinya, according to a Congolese media report, pressed the bishops’ case for adhering to the current constitution and asked the president to restore the broadcast signal.

The largest nation in Sub-Saharan Africa, the Democratic Republic of the Congo has 68 million people, 53% of whom are Catholic.
