Pope highlights value of police work

May 21, 2015

Pope Francis said that police work is essential to a civilized society, in a May 21 audience with relatives of police officers who have been killed or severely injured in the line of service.

Society “is indebted to you for the possibility of conducting an orderly life,” the Pope told the police officers. He praised them for undertaking work that “demands the courage of helping those in danger and stopping the aggressor.”

The commitment that is made by police officials—including the risk of losing one’s life in action—is a welcome antidote to the lack of commitment that is commonplace in contemporary society, the Pope observed.

Pope Francis made a special point of thanking the Italian police for their efforts to manage the migration crisis. “You are on the front line both in the initial reception of immigrants, and in counteracting unscrupulous traffickers,” he remarked.
