San Francisco archdiocese, teachers' union working to settle dispute on personnel policy

May 21, 2015

The San Francisco archdiocese is working with teachers to revise a handbook that would set standards for faculty members in Catholic schools.

A revised handbook, which had required teachers not to engage in activities that would directly contradict Church teaching, had prompted angry protests. Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone had indicated that he would revise the proposed standards, without abandoning his campaign to ensure that parochial schools have a distinctively Catholic identity.

The National Catholic Reporter reports that draft copies of the newly revised handbook show “a conciliatory tone” but do not fundamentally alter the substance of the archbishop’s proposed policy.

The San Francisco archdiocese has released a short statement saying that it is negotiating with the teachers’ union, and “getting closer to resolving the few remaining bargaining issues on which there is disagreement.”

It doesn't seem to me that there is much to be negotiated when it comes to teaching Catholic doctrine and behavior by the teachers. Unless I am wrong, these are Catholic schools and the Archbishop is correct to expect Catholic teaching and behavior. Nobody is obligated in any way to teach at a Catholic school.
