Italy must strive for excellence, not 'muddling through,' cardinal says
May 20, 2015
Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, the president of the Italian bishops’ conference, said that Italian society should aim for a recovery of excellence, rather than simply “muddling through.”
“Recovery means innovation,” Cardinal Bagnasco said. He cited European responses to immigration crisis as an example of stopgap solutions that are unlikely to solve problems. The measures for immigrants, he said were “commendable but miserly.”
Cardinal Bagnaso also questioned the adoption of new legislation allowing for faster divorces. "Is suppressing a longer time-frame for reflection, especially in the presence of children, really a good thing?" he asked. He said that the drive for easier divorce was an instance of what Pope Francis has called “ideological colonization”—the imposition of new moral principles, especially on matters of sexuality.
