English bishop: failures of end-of-life care show need to recover Christian dignity of death

May 20, 2015

An English bishop has said that he is appalled by a report that shows a breakdown in end-of-life care in the nation’s health system.

Bishop John Sherrington, an auxiliary of the Westminster diocese, said: “I was shocked by some of these stories in the health ombudsman’s report.” The report, entitled Dying without Dignity, provided evidence that in many cases, terminal patients were not given treatment that would have relieved their suffering.

Bishop Sherrington said that society should “reflect more honestly and deeply on the reality of death,” as a way to spur demand for compassionate care. “We need to learn again the art of dying well which we find in our Christian heritage,” he said.
