Japan earthquake response fostered appreciation for Church, says priest

May 20, 2015

The executive director of Caritas Japan said that the Church’s prompt and sustained response to the 2011 Tohoku earthquake and tsunami has fostered a positive impression of Catholicism in a nation where only 0.4% of people are Catholic.

“There is a spark of hope from all this,” said Father Takeshi Seto, according to an AsiaNews report.

“Immediately after the disaster, Caritas was among the first to take the field to help the survivors,” he continued. “And the Japanese civil society has noted this favorably. We got to show the reality of the Catholic Church a little more in a country where the proclamation of the Gospel is still difficult. We hope to move forward on this path with hope.”
