USCCB official urges support for parental choice in education
May 15, 2015
At a House of Representatives committee meeting, the executive director for Catholic Education of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops expressed support for the continued funding of the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, which allots federal funds to low-income parents in low-performing public schools to help pay for tuition at the private school of their choice.
The Obama administration opposes the program.
“Today’s hearing is a welcomed first step in highlighting the transformative influence that parental choice can have in providing opportunities for students and their families,” said Sister John Mary Fleming, a Nashville Dominican.
“The Catholic Church has unequivocally taught that parents have the right and responsibility to serve as the primary educators of their children,” she added. “Parents have the primary and inalienable right and duty to educate their children and must enjoy freedom in their choice of schools.”
