Agenda announced for US bishops’ June meeting

May 13, 2015

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishops has announced the agenda for its spring meeting, which will take place in St. Louis from June 10 to 12.

Different bishops will brief the meeting on a wide range of topics, including the Synod of Bishops, the Pope’s upcoming visit to the US and encyclical, same-sex marriage, the ongoing response to the Haitian earthquake, immigration reform, World Youth Day, digital resources, and the updating of the bishops’ quadrennial statement on political responsibility.

The bishops will hear presentations from seven speakers: Alice and Jeffrey Heinzen, who were observers at the 2014 Synod of Bishops; Lucia and Ricardo Luzondo, directors of Hispanic Outreach for Marriage Builders; Claire and John Grabowski, members of the Pontifical Council for the Family; and Curtis Martin, founder and CEO of the Fellowship of Catholic University Students (FOCUS).

The bishops will also vote on strategic priorities for 2017 through 2020 and on a revised translation of the Liturgy of the Hours’ canticles.

Now they are making a little sense! Meeting in St Louis! Centrally located city making it easier for bishops to travel and attend and also getting out of Washington, D.C. I vote for making St. Louis the USCCB headquarters and selling off the huge bldg. in D.C., getting rid of most of the employees many of whom are not practicing or obedient Catholics, and finding a monastery close to St.Louis large enough to accommodate the bishops meeting for prayer, fraternity, business and preprandials. :)

Bishops respond, if at all, to crises. They don't seem to understand that if they would pay attention to good formation of priests, catechesis, prayerful liturgy, and preaching, the crises would be less likely to develop. But all that is not nearly as exciting as politics.

While the bishops are dealing with all of this "big picture", "world view" stuff, the faith of Catholics in their parishes is dying as many old and foreign priests play it safe and make no waves. The faith of today's Catholics is not being warmed by the fire of the Holy Spirit. It is being quenched by the Church's bureaucracy!
