Vatican letter rues high youth unemployment

April 21, 2015

The Holy See Press Office has released a letter by the Vatican’s Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, on the occasion of the annual national day for the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart.

“The situation of young people, also because of the prolongation of the economic crisis, has become particularly difficult,” said Cardinal Parolin, in reference to Italy’s youth unemployment rate, now at 42.6%. “The lack of work, in particular, determines a great existential uncertainty and also prejudices the realization of legitimate aspirations, be it in the professional ambit or in reference to the formation of a family.”
