Pope-emeritus Benedict marks his 88th birthday

April 16, 2015

Pope Francis offered his daily Mass for the intentions of his predecessor Benedict XVI on April 16, as the retired Pontiff celebrated his 88th birthday.

"I would like to remind that today is Pope Benedict XVI's birthday," Pope Francis told the congregation at the Domus Sanctae Marthae. He asked the faithful to pray "that the Lord may sustain him and give him much joy and happiness."

The Vatican released a photo showing Benedict XVI and his older brother, Msgr. Georg Ratzinger, relaxing in the Vatican Gardens with a beer, along with a group of visitors from their native Bavaria.
