Cardinal Jean-Claude Turcotte, the retired Archbishop of Montreal, died on April 8 after a long illness.
A native of Montreal, Jean-Claude Turcotte was ordained to the priesthood in 1959 and named an auxiliary bishop in 1982. In 1990 he became the Archbishop of Montreal, serving in that post until his retirement in 2012 at the age of 75. He was elevated to the College of Cardinals by St. John Paul II in 1994.
In a message to Archbishop Christian Lepine, who now heads the Montreal archdiocese, Pope Francis praised the deceased cardinal as “a committed pastor, attentive to the challenges of the contemporary Church.”
With the death of Cardinal Turcotte there are now 225 living members of the College of Cardinals, of whom 122 are under the age of 80 and therefore eligible to participate in a papal conclave.
