Pope encourages peace talks in Colombia, plans visit there
April 03, 2015
In a message to the bishops of Colombia, Pope Francis has said that they must “not lose energy or hope” in working toward a final accord that would end the nation’s long years of civil strife.
The Pope offered his encouragement for talks between the government and rebels of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). The Pope emphasized the bishops’ role as “collaborators in the construction of peace.”
“Constructing peace is a complex process that does not come to completion in short term spaces or plans,” the Pope remarked. As the peace talks continue, the Pontiff said that all parties should “continue to work for truth, justice, and reparation.”
Archbishop Ettore Balestero, the apostolic nuncio in Colombia, has disclosed that the Pope plans to visit the South American country. He did not indicate a time frame for the visit, however. President Juan Manuel Santos said that a papal visit would be welcomed by the Colombian people “with open arms and hearts.”
