At Good Friday service, papal preacher notes world's indifference to suffering of persecuted Christians

April 03, 2015

The preacher of the pontifical household, decried the silence of silence of the world in the face of Christian persecution, during his homily at a penance service in the Vatican basilica on Good Friday.

“The slaughter of Christians is taking place before the indifference of the world institutions,” Father Raneiro Cantalamassa said.

While Christians are not the only victims of violence, Father Cantalamassa said, “one cannot ignore the fact that in many countries they are the chosen and most frequent victims.” He pointed to the murder of Christian students by Islamic jihadists at a university in Kenya the previous day.

Anyone who professes a genuine religious faith “cannot remain indifferent to what is happening,” the papal preacher said.

Bless the Pope, but we have not heard about the slaughter of Christians from our bishop or priests, nor have we seen or heard any appeals from the USCCB for the laity to actually help. Yet the news has many reports of Christians being killed and persecuted by Muslim terrorists. What does the Church teach on our response to persecution of our brothers and sisters? What is the Church doing to help the persecuted? The Church must lead by example before it can call others to help!

The jihadis claim that we are Crusaders. Oh that it were a reality. On the contrary, we look the other way while thousands in Africa and Asia are being murdered for their faith.

I truly think it is time for a new Crusade. Our Pope should call for one. This killing will not end until the these murderers are conquered. What would the preacher of the Pontifical Household have the world do? Cross our fingers and pray for peace? The extremists who dish out the murder we are seeing will only stop when they are physically defeated. Haven't we learned that yet? Past popes called on the laity for a strong response to murderous aggression, why not now? I'm serious.
