At weekly audience, Pope previews Easter Triduum

April 01, 2015

At his regular weekly public audience on April 1, Pope Francis spoke about the Easter Triduum, inviting the faithful to “enter into the mystery.”

The Gospel for Holy Thursday, the Pope observed, tells the story of Jesus washing the feet of his disciples. The Pope remarked: “If we partake in holy Communion without being sincerely willing to wash each other's feet, we do not recognize the Body of the Lord.”

On Good Friday, the Pope continued, we recall how “Jesus, by His sacrifice, transformed the greatest wickedness into the greatest love.” He said that throughout Christian history, saintly people have “reflected a ray of this perfect, full, uncontaminated love.”

On Holy Saturday, Pope Francis said, the Church identifies with the Virgin Mary, “the first and perfect believer,” keeping the flame of hope alive in a time of darkness.

Finally, at the Easter Vigil, “we celebrate the Risen Christ as the centre and end of the cosmos and of history.”
