No justification for civil war in South Sudan, Christian leaders say; fighting must stop

April 01, 2015

Christian leaders in South Sudan have joined in a public appeal for an end to the country’s civil war.

"Stop immediately this senseless war that is bringing immense suffering to the South Sudanese people," said a message issued by the South Sudan Council of Churches, after peace talks between the contending parties collapsed.

"If the parties are unable to reach agreement by themselves, then they must be persuaded to accept a solution which neutral parties and friends of South Sudan, and more especially the ordinary citizens of South Sudan, consider to be reasonable,” the Church leaders said.

In the past, the Christian leaders said, rebels in South Sudan fought for freedom from the Muslim-dominated north. But “what are we fighting for now?” they asked. Saying that the continued bloodshed is motivated only by clashing ambitions, their statement concluded that “there is no moral justification and no excuse to continue fighting and killing.”
